HR Questions

2. What do you want in your next role?

  • A role with challenges that develops on existing engineering knowledge
  • I’m a mechanical designer at heart, so a position that involves CAD work.

3. Time you failed

  • miscalculated timeline for MRI bed due to underestimating specialty parts delivery
  • lacked understanding of non-magnetic motor & belt drive lead times (overseas shipping)
  • waiting period led to one-week contract extension
  • mitigated downtime by working on UI design & firmware during wait
  • learned lesson applied in capstone project
  • sourced overseas/specialty components first in capstone
  • met symposium deadline with finished product

4. Biggest Weakness

  • Firmware engineering, not my passion, and was not able to spend enough time developing that skillset when focusing on mechanical and electrical engineering skills
  • Delegating tasks

5. Biggest Strength

My biggest strength is a set of intrinsic habits you can’t easily ‘teach’: relentless work ethic, sharp attention to the details that make or break a design, and a drive to deliver high-quality results.

Capstone – Range of motion, shell design, electrical design

6. How do you handle stress?

  • Break into high priority tasks
  • Stay healthy and moving to keep brain clear
  • Have been through a lot of stress at University of Waterloo, so I one skill is being used to it.

How do you handle conflict at work?

1. What are your salary expectations?

I’m focused on finding a strong mutual fit on responsibilities, impact, and growth. Do you have a range for the salary for this type of position so I can let you know if I am comfortable with it?

Great – that range is with my expectations given my background in mechanical design, thermals & FEA. I’m confident we can land at a number that makes sense if we both see the fit.

To give you a bigger incentive to hire me, given this is my first full-time role, I’m comfortable starting at the lower end of your range. I’m confident I’ll quickly justify moving up—work ethic, learning agility, and reliable execution aren’t gained from a couple extra years; they’re intrinsic strengths I bring from day one—and I’ll get up to speed quickly and deliver results.
